The story of Forge Worlds

The Anvil of Worlds

At the foot of the mountains stands a forge where metal has been struck since the dawn of time. One evening, an apprentice swung a hammer there and opened ten worlds. This is the apprentice's story.

Updated October 26, 2026

The master and the apprentice

Master Brann has forged for generations of heroes. White beard, red headband, leather apron and a hammer on his shoulder: everyone in the valley knows his laugh, which drowns out the ring of the anvil.

His latest apprentice has no armor and no sword: just a tank top, soot-covered hands and a wild urge to forge something extraordinary. That's you.

Finding the Anvil of Worlds

Finding the Anvil of Worlds

One stormy evening, while digging for ore deep in the old mine, the master and the apprentice stumble upon a forgotten chamber. In the middle, on a stone dais, an anvil covered in blue runes waits beneath the dust.

The apprentice touches it. The runes light up, the air starts to swirl, and a portal opens above the anvil: beyond it, islands float in a sky full of stars. Master Brann drops his lantern. In all his books, only one anvil looks like this one: the Anvil of Worlds.

The rule of the anvil

The Anvil of Worlds doesn't forge like any other. Each hammer strike draws metal from another world, another time: Stone Age flint, the pharaohs' bronze, the Vikings' rune iron… and what comes out is always a surprise.

The more the forge grows, the more advanced the worlds it reaches: the folded steel of the samurai, steampunk copper, the neon lights of Neo-Tokyo, crystals from a distant planet, and even starlight itself. The apprentice wears everything forged here, so the apprentice's look changes with every world.

The Star Devourer

the Star Devourer

Why is the anvil waking up now? At the far end of the last world, a creature made of night is swallowing the stars one by one: the Star Devourer. Every star it eats makes the portals tremble, and the creatures of the ten worlds, panicked, lash out at anything that passes by.

Each world now has its chief, a boss guarding the way to the next one. To reach the Devourer, the apprentice will have to defeat them all, battle after battle. As for Master Brann, he stays at the forge: he guides, he advises… and he laughs out loud whenever a rare weapon comes out of the anvil.

The ten worlds

Around the forge, ten worlds float in the sky, linked by paths of light. Each one is an era, and each era is a rarity: the more advanced the world, the rarer and more powerful its gear.

Companions on the road

The apprentice doesn't travel alone. In the forge, eggs of six rarities hatch in their incubators: a chick, a kitten… or, with some luck, a phoenix, a neon unicorn, a star whale. Three pets follow the apprentice along the road and join every fight.

With a blow of a whistle, the apprentice also summons mounts: a giant snail to start with, a mammoth, a steam bike, a mecha dragon and, for the luckiest, a flying saucer or a cosmic whale.

The trials

Between battles, four places put the apprentice to the test. Each one has its own enemies, scenery and rewards.

The Hammer Thief

The Hammer Thief

A goblin in a fur hood has stolen whole sacks of hammers. His hideout: a clearing full of tents and carts. He fights alone, but he's tough.

The Lab

The Lab

An alchemist's workshop, with its copper stills and potions. Flask-headed robots and mechanical spiders guard the research potions.

And when the apprentice wants to take on other blacksmiths, there's the arena, with its eight leagues and its duels, and guilds, where everyone teams up to bring down the weekly boss.

And you, how far will you go?

The Anvil of Worlds is waiting for its next hammer strike. What will come out, nobody knows: that's the whole magic of the forge.
